Collared Dove (Streptopelia Decaocto) Pigeons and Doves

Historia

The collared dove is of medium size with an average length of 32cm. These doves are a pale pinky-brown colour with a very distinctive black marking around their collar. Collared Doves have deep red eyes and feet, with their tiresome and repetitive cooing being a sound we all recognise. These doves are usually seen as solitary birds but can often form large flocks when food becomes available.

The female will lay 2 white eggs in a nest made of twigs and will incubate the nest at night time. The male takes over and incubates during the day. It takes 14 - 18 days for the young to hatch and they usually fledge within 18-19 days, depending on food available. 4 broods a year is common, with some years as many as 6, again, depending on available food.

Beteende

Collared Doves can be see almost throughout the UK and often in cities, towns and villages. Common in most gardens foraging for food such as seeds and grain, they can be seen all year round. Collared Doves really only came to the UK in the 1950's after spreading across Europe from the Middle East.
